Entering First Year Students

Will take the following course:

 

Alternative Dispute Resolution – 2 units

 

 

Book list …                         

                                              

                                              1.   No book is required for the Alternative Dispute Resolution course.  However, the professor may possibly charge a fee for providing class handouts.

                

 2.   Legal Dictionary - required.  Law students must have a law dictionary for use during their law studies.  Listed below are some recommended titles.  

        a.   Black’s Law Dictionary   (Most used by attorneys, although not the least expensive.) - or - 

 

        b.   Barron’s Law Dictionary - or -  

 

         c.   Dictionary of Legal Terms: A Simplified Guide to the Language of Law, By Steven H. Gifis.

 

3.      Although not required, it is recommended that entering students peruse a legal Summary/Outline for each State Bar required subject in advance of starting the courses later this year.

        Only one summary each is needed for Torts, Criminal Law, and Contract Law.   Some recommended titles are:  Emanuels, Gilberts, Sum & Substance, Black Letter, Roadmap, etc.   

By reading Summary/Outlines, it can give students a head start learning basic rules and will help later, when reading cases for the courses. by making the subjects more understandable.  

                           

Please, order your law dictionary early, so you can receive it in time to start classes.

 

All casebooks, legal treatises, outlines, dictionaries, and other relevant study materials are available online.  If you enter the Title and Author into your computer’s search engine, you will likely find sellers with competitive prices. 

Some book sellers also offer Used Books, which can lower your book costs.  Some online sellers are Amazon.com, Half.com, BarnesandNoble.com, BarristerBooks.com, Thelawbookstore.com, Ebay.com, and other bookstores).

 **CAVEAT:  If you purchase used casebooks, please, be certain that you are purchasing the correct edition and not an older outdated version.

Also, local law bookstores at Stanford and Santa Clara Universities have some titles in stock.  The advantage in visiting a nearby law bookstore is the opportunity to browse through the books, CD’s, flash cards, and study aids and see

available materials that may assist you in your studies.
